As owner of Good Things, a catering company,
Kathleen Whatley began her career in the food business with
an antique
shop that just happened to serve an English Cream Tea every
afternoon. The Madhatter Tea Room in Round Top, Texas, soon
became less and less antiques and more food. The demand
became so intense for more luncheons and dinners, that
Kathleen was forced to move her restaurant to a larger
location at "The Old Stone Brewery" in Round Top. She began
serving full lunches and dinners in a rusti-
cally elegant atmosphere. She became known for her good
food and gracious hospitality. It was not long before the
inevitable requests for private specials luncheons, wedding
cakes and receptions became a very large part of her
business. Festival Institute at Round Top was one of her
best clients, relying on her to provide
receptions for their guest composers, conductors and
musicians featured at their annual concert season every
summer. Her restaurant was listed in Country Living Magazine
and photographed by Southern Living.
After 4 years of hard work and the demands of family she
closed her business. But she could not give up her love of
food and the requests of her wonderful customers, so she
went to work for two years as pastry chef to Frisch Auf!
Country Club in La Grange Texas. Meanwhile she was also
teaching cooking classes at such notable places as Sur La
Table in Houston, Rice Epicurean, L'aglio and several other
venues. Kathleen was also baking wedding cakes and specialty
items for her customers.
She is now working as private chef to
several clients who host B&B guests,
retreats, special parties and weddings.
